The 3 easy steps to finding that elusive ME Time

March 14, 2014 By Karen Main Leave a Comment

You are in need of a little more regular ME Time and you have had a wonderful idea.

It is simple, it is fun and the thought of it fills you to the brim with joy.  This one little thing, when done regularly, will add some juicy yummy value to your life.

You check the list and have everything you need.

Everything that is except time.

Ah yes that elusive and precious commodity that seemingly slips through our fingers each and every day.

Now before you get too excited, I have not found the magic wand that creates time. We do still have a glorious 24 hours in each day.

I am about to share my favourite tip for ensuring those precious ideas and practices we both desire and skip, are given their due time.

Join me as we reclaim your ME Time.

ME Time

There are three key steps to finding ME Time,  all designed to work beautifully together.

Step 1. Write it down

Think about just how important this practice is for you?
What value does it add to your life?
How do you feel when thinking about it?

Will it bring you joy and a chance to experience more happiness?
Does it relax you and induce a sense of calm?
Does it stretch your creative muscle and help you explore your many talents?
Will it improve your health and fitness?

You get the picture.

Now write it all down.  Make it pretty, use some fancy paper or a sparkly pen and keep it somewhere safe.

Step 2. Schedule

How long will you need and how often?

Do you need an hour per week, 10 minutes each day?
Be clear and realistic.
Now grab your calendar, your diary and book it in.

Is it a daily activity, like my photoaday?  When is a good time?

My biggest tip when scheduling a new practice is this;  whenever possible include it with an already established routine.

You want to spend 1 minute each day in silence and stillness.   Sit on the bathroom floor for a minute straight after brushing your teeth.
You want to write one sentence in your journal everyday.  Keep your journal beside the bed and write that sentence before you turn the lights out.
You would like to begin to meditate everyday.  Drive to work or school pick up 10 minutes early and sit in the car and listen to a guided CD.
You want to establish a daily gratitude practice.  Tell your family something you are grateful for at dinner every night.
You want to take a photo each day.  Stop each day when walking the dog to admire a flower, the sky or a building and take that photo.

Attaching a new habit to an already established ritual gives you a reminder and a prompt.

Step 3.  Commit, reassess and adjust

I know there will be at least 101 reasons why you cannot stick to the schedule.   When this happens don’t give up.

Go back and read your own sparkly words.  Remind yourself of the true value in following through with this practice.
Recheck and reassess the time needed and the space allocated in your schedule?
Adjust if needed, no biggie!!
Who can support you?   Have you asked them for help?
Think outside the square for magical pockets of  time.

Now dust off, regroup and begin again.

This is your ME Time and it is invaluable.

You can make this happen.

Share some of your tips.
