Is it just me or does it feel like 2015 was just yesterday?
Are we already a week into a brand new year?
It’s like the days, weeks and months go faster the older you get?
Is it because we’re not filling our days intentionally?
We’re not crafting a meaningful life that incrementally adds up to something important and memorable enough to look back and say, “I spent my time well.”
Our daily efforts become haphazard, our attention divided and we stop making deliberate choices about how we spend out precious time and it quite simply passes us by.
And that’s the thing, time passes by even more quickly when you’re busy and not paying attention.
Several years back I was doing exactly this. I was living a ‘hectic & blah’ life.
I was flip flopping from one week to the next. Always busy and yet never satisfied and able to account for my time.
Days and weeks blurred into months and as I sipped my bubbly one New Years Eve I felt heavy knowing an entire year of my life was drifting away.
The next day I pulled out a notebook and began to write down some goals for the coming year, determined not to let another precious year of my life escape unnoticed.
I struggled at first, it was obvious I had lost touch with myself, with my yearnings and my desires.
I took my time, kept the pen moving and eventually my thoughts began to flow more freely.
Several hours later I had a set of meaningful goals laid out before me.
Even better, I had a sense of knowing ME again and an enthusiasm for the year ahead that was brewing within.
Funnily enough goal setting wasn’t new to me, in fact during my ‘career years’ I had taught and led many teams through this same process.
Yet somehow after having my babies I stopped planning for MY future. I stopped thinking about what I wanted and instead I allowed the current of life to pull me along.
You can’t ‘flip flop’ your way to a meaningful life.
Knowing what matters and where you’re headed requires time devoted to self enquiry and exploration.
New Years Eve is now my refresh button. It’s when I debrief the year gone by, I celebrate my achievements and offer gratitude for all that I already have.
I then hit refresh spending days, and even weeks, diving deep into what I want to move toward… in the year ahead.
I do this because every single year of your life can be exciting, fulfilling and meaningful in its own way, and as you evolve what matters most also evolves.
Instead of ticking off days, weeks and years telling yourself things will get better one day, I want you to ask yourself; what can I do to lead the way this year?
As we head into the second week of 2016 I invite you to reflect on where you are right now and give thanks for all that you have. Then for a brief moment dream big and imagine where you could possibly be in a years time.
Simply being here, reading this and thinking about your future is already the beginning.
You get to choose the next step.
This year I am offering my goal setting process as a FREE 14 day emails series.
Bite sized tidbits each day that will have you flourishing in 2016.
It all begins Monday January 11th.
You can register your details here if you’re ready to make this your best year ever.
