The kids ran ahead, excitedly squealing as they raced each other into the maze.
I entered slowly, amazed by how dense the hedge was and how high the walls were.
I began making my way toward the focal point, the exit on the other side.
Countless left and right turns later my enthusiasm was sliding. It felt as if I was walking in circles and the walls were beginning to close in on me.
From the corner of my eye I noticed a bird perched in a nearby tree.
Oh how I wanted to climb up on that branch and take in a big picture view of where I was, in relation to where I wanted to be.
Just like the maze life takes you down many paths.
You begin with a glorious dream, that dream becomes your goals and you step forward into life.
Along comes choices, options and countless decisions are made.
You find a new job, meet a life partner, discover new friends and continually change direction.
Along come children and you redirect again, and again and again.
Your commitments go up and your choices seems scarce.
Then one day you find yourself standing in the middle of your life wondering where you are in relation to your dreams.
Where is fulfilment? What happened to meaning? Is happiness with them?
You could stay here, stagnant and eventually perish just as you are.
You could keep wandering and hope by luck and chance you stumble upon fulfilment at some point along the way.
Or you could question the path you are on and rise up for a birds eye view.
Taking a long, honest look at where you are heading and what, if anything, you are pointing toward.
It all begins by believing you are worthy of more……..and you are.
Then giving yourself permission to desire and yearn for a feel good life.
Deciding not to settle for mediocre, and wanting what you want with all your heart.
Creating space for dreaming and looking for opportunity beyond what surrounds you.
Getting to know yourself and truthfully answering the uncomfortable questions.
Dancing with fear as you step beyond your zone of comfort.
Ultimately finding your unique focal point of fulfilment.
That rich spot you turn toward day after day after day.
Instead of wandering aimlessly make a commitment today to YOU, to your happiness and to a life rich with meaning.
This is YOUR one great life and it is up to YOU to lead it fabulously.

Hi Karen,
I would like to ask for your permission to use your poem ‘finding fulfillment in the maze of life’ in my doctoral dissertation as an introduction to the research findings. Almost everything highlighted in this poem resonates with the participants’ journeys explored through my study.
Regards
Yes of course Fazeela, I truly appreciate you asking permission and I’m delightedly saying yes.
